We in the Islands are well aware that it is hurricane season.  Right now two hurricanes are causing concern.  Hurricane Madeline and Hurricane Lester are both moving through the islands this week.  Hawaii Civil Defense recommends that every household make an emergency kit.  What should it contain?  Start with this:

  1.  Water: One gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation

  2.  Food: Non-perishables that do not require cooking.

  3. Eating utensils: Plates, mess kits, forks and chop sticks. Don’t forget a non-electric can opener for canned foods.

  4. Radio: Battery-powered or hand crank radio with NOAA Weather alert .

  5.  Light: Flashlight, portable fluorescent, or LED light.

  6. Spare batteries: Check annually.

  7. First aid kit.

  8. Whistle: Important for signaling for help as a whistle carries much farther than the human voice and uses less energy than yelling.

  9.  Dust mask: Helps to filter contaminated air.

  10. Sanitation: Moist towelettes, toilet paper, 5-gallon bucket, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.

  11. Tools: Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, duct tape.

  12. Local area maps.

  13. Prescription: Special medications and glasses.

  14. Baby: Infant formula and diapers.

  15. Pets: Pet food and extra water for your pet
