The Nonhurricane

Last week was consumed with hurricane preparation.  Iselle was set to run right into the Big Island and no one was sure what would happen next.  Luckily, it was not nearly as bad as predicted and on Oahu all we had was a bit of rain.

Living far away from family on the mainland has its drawbacks.  Many of our relatives in the Midwest just don't get the fact that each Hawaiian island is separate.  Over and over again we had to answer phone calls asking how bad the damage was.  We kept explaining that the Big Island was hit not Oahu.  We were surprised to find out that most of our extended family doesn't even know which island we live on.  I get it.  We are not part of their day to day lives anymore so they don't remember all the details of our lives.  Life in the islands has very few downsides but being far removed from extended family is definitely one of them.
